Welcome, Commander

Reign is a free real-time multiplayer war / strategy persistent browser-based game. Unlike most real-time strategy games, a game of Reign lasts approximately one month.

A Day in the Life of a Reigner

One structure at a time, you will build your colony into a nation. You will draft soldiers, extract precious resources, form allies, conduct trade, negotiate pacts and raise armies to defend and protect the future of your nation. Whether you are online or off, your citizens will continue working and your factories will continue building.

CHAPTER I: War    How to survive and thrive in a world of war.

Don't Panic!

All players are protected from war for the first 3 days (72 hours) from their first login. This gives new players time to learn how to play and build up before other players can declare war on them. You're at the right place! Reading this guide is the best possible first step towards success in Reign. So, take a deep breathe and continue on. :}

Why Fight?

Nations are motivated to fight wars primarily to gain land. A successful attack on a nation captures both structures and land from the defeated enemy.

Declaring War

To first step of war is to declare war on the enemy nation. To declare war on a nation, you click Declare War in the nation's profile. You must then wait 24 hours for the war to be activated. Once active, both nations can freely attack each other.

Defending

Your nation will automatically defend against incoming attacks, whether you or online or off. The only way to gain land in war, however, is by attacking.

Attacking

To attack a nation you are at war with, click the Deploy link from that nation's profile. You are then prompted to select what units to attack with and how many! When attacking a nation, you must always deploy an Officer.

Officers

Officers guide your troops into battle. Every nation is allowed a maximum of 3 officers and each officers costs 25,000 money. When an officer's attack is successful, he will gain experience. As your officers gain experience, they will level up by gaining new star. The higher the level of an officer, the more motivated your troops are, which reduces the chance your troops will retreat in battle. Officers are special offensive units and thus do not participate in defensive battles (and thus obviously gain no experience from defensive battles).

Death

Death is an inevitable aspect of Reign. If you reach 0 land, you will be considered dead. To continue playing, you may either rebuild your nation or delete your nation and start over.

Deleting Your Nation

If you are dead, you are allowed to delete your nation and start over. To delete your nation, click "Delete This Nation" link in the Player pane. You will be prompted to confirm deletion. Once confirmed, your nation will be automatically and instantly wiped from existence, allowing you to recreate a nation of the same name or a new name in that world.

End of Chapter.

CHAPTER II: Growth    Building your nation to into the skies.

Interface

Reign's main page is called Overview. Overview has various panes (mini-windows) that assist you in your nation management. Various links found in panes will pop-up special task windows such as Battle Log, Deploy, Research and Communication Center.

Making Money

Your nation produces money every minute, based on your current population. Therefore, to increase your per minute revenue, you must expand your population. To increase your population, you must build either a Town, City or Metropolis.

Towns are quick and cheap way of expanding your population. Cities, while more expensive, offer higher income per land used. Metropolises, once researched, offer the highest income per land used ratio in the of all three.

Obtaining Land

There are two ways to expand your empire: Develop nearby land (via money) or conquer developed land from another player (via war).

All nations have a vast amount of land surrounding their nation. However, this land cannot be built on until it is developed. The cost to develop nearby land begins cheap. However, as you develop more and more land, the cost of developing land will increase exponentially.

Eventually you may find it more cost efficient to conquer another nation's land by way of war. We will talk more about this later.

Construction

To build a structure, click the "Open Build Window" link at the top-right of Overview page then select Structures from the list. Any nation may build up to 3 structures at once. If more than 3 structures are currently being constructed, a construction queue will be created for the other orders.

For example, if you were to order 5 structures, 3 would immediately begin building while the other 2 orders would wait in line. Like all things in Reign, you do not need to be logged in for your structures to build. When the first structure finishes building, the next structure in line will begin. This process continues until all orders are complete.

Your nation exists in real-time and will work hard to carry out your orders, even while you're at school, work or asleep!

Army

It's important to always have an army for your nation, should a nation declare war on you. To build an army, click "Open Build Window" link at the top-right of Overview page. You may select Infantry, Armor, Helicopters, Jets and Missiles from this menu. Armor units require a Factory to be built. Helicopters and Jets require both a Factory and an Airbase to be built. Missiles require both a Factory and a Silo to be built.

In Reign, you must provide barracks for your troops to live in. All nations begin the game with a natural 100 barracks spaces. However, as your army grows, you will need to build more Barracks to increase your barracks space. Each Barracks gives you 300 barracks spaces.

Each serviceman requires 1 barracks space. Obviously, an infantry unit is only one person, so 1 barracks space is required per infantry unit. You must also have barracks space for the pilots of your advanced infantry units such as tanks, helicopters and jets.

For example, a Julian tank has 3 servicemen inside of it and a Z26 Bomber has 2 servicemen inside of it. Thus, if you have 10 soldiers, 5 Julian tanks and 2 Z26 Bombers, you are using 29 barracks spaces!

Research

Every night, around midnight, all nations are given a Research point. To research, click the Research link in the Economy pane. This will open a new window with two Research trees: Diplomacy and Military. It might be a good idea to consult your allies before investing Research points!

End of Chapter.

CHAPTER III: Politics    Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Regions

Each world is divided into 10 regions. When you enter the world, you are placed in a random region. The game distributes new players intelligently, so that all regions are equally populated. Reign automatically removes idle nations from the game to help keep your region full of active players. Reign's system of removing idle players gives nations with higher amounts of land a bit more leniency than small land nations. As a general rule, be sure to login to Reign once every couple of days. A region is both a "natural alliance" and a "geographical location" within Reign.

Regions: Natural Alliance

The default chat for all players is the Region chat. This chat is accessible to all nations within your region. It is a good idea to be diplomatic with your neighbors, so that you can conduct trade and defend each other. If you are interested in becoming the leader of the region, you must gain votes by lobbying the nation leaders in your region. Despite all of this, you are the supreme ruler of your nation. It is entirely up to you whether or not you will be friendly with your neighbors, neutral or combative. You may attack nations within your region just like any other nation in the world. However, no land or structures are captured by civil war (war between nations in the same region). Instead, land and structures in civil war are destroyed.

Regions: Geographical Location

Nations within a region are very close in proximity in the Reign world. As a result, there is no transaction fee for money transfers and no shipment fee for goods transfer. In addition, when deploying military aid to a nation within your region, the travel time and oil consumption is drastically reduced.

Region Leadership Elections

As a member of your region, it is your duty to vote for a leader of the region. Elections are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night. To vote for a nation to be leader, click the 'Vote for Leader' link in the Politics pane. You may change your vote as often as you like. Around midnight on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, all votes in your region will be processed and power will be automatically transfered to the nation with the highest number of votes. If there is no clear winner (a tie), the current leader will remain leader until the next election.

Region Programs

The most important responsibility of a region leader is administering the regional programs such as Expansion, Defense and Education. A region leader has the authority to levy a region tax to fund regional programs that he or she creates. It is important for a region leader to represent the interests of the member nations to insure his reelection.

Region Tax

Each region program has a maximum of 10 levels. Each level increases the region tax by 1%. If, for example, a leader creates a level 5 Defense program in fear of being attacked and a level 10 Expansion program to encourage growth, the region tax for all nations is 15%. In this example, each nation in the region would effectively make 15% less money to help fund the regional programs. Region tax is automatically collected every minute. If you feel your region's tax policy is hurting your nation's economy, you may lobby nations within your region to elect leader that supports small regional government -- or perhaps run for office yourself!

Region Leader

A region can be renamed once every 7 days by the region leader. Region programs can be changed once per day by the region leader (resets around midnight). The region tax is automatically determined based on how many region programs you create and what level they are funded (from 1 to 10).

Pacts

The politics of Reign are very complex and things aren't always quite as they seem. Like the real world, the majority of world conflict in Reign is manipulated by secretive, powerful men. Like the real world, there are shadow alliances behind the scenes that carefully craft their plans for survival, world peace or even world domination. These shadow alliances, in Reign, are called Pacts.

Pacts are permanent meetings between friends within a world. While some pacts are public, they are often times secretive. Any nation can create a pact. The founder can then invite nations into his pact. Pacts come with a buddylist and a chat. Pacts are not region-specific. There is no limit to the number of pacts a nation can be in.

NOTE: PACTS IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT. CURRENTLY, THE PACTS SYSTEM IS NOT UPLOADED. WE EXPECT PACTS TO BE RELEASED EARLY JANUARY 2008.

End of Chapter.

Ending Statement

Look around you. This is your world. The trees, the sea, the bird and the lamb. Hold it! There are those who wish to take it all away. Take their life! Every dawn, distant soldiers are born to oppose you. Pollute the soil of their nation with the blood of their people! Your foes grow in strength by the minute. Destroy them! Conquer all who oppose you! Build your empire! By God, this is your chance! Rise up .. and REIGN!
